Armed MCC activists blocked the Chatra-Gaya road near Jorighat by placing a tractor on the highway and indiscriminately fired at a police patrol killing eight policemen, including the officer in-charge of the Jori police station, Kola Tigga, on the spot, they said.
Four others, who suffered gun-shot injuries, were being operated upon at a government hospital in Chatra, they said.
Policemen from Chatra arrived at the spot soon after the incident and engaged the ultras in an encounter. Senior police officials have rushed to the spot.
Entry and exit points of Chatra district have been sealed and an alert was sounded in the Naxalite-hit districts of Chatra, Hazaribagh, Latehar and Palamu.
