Aftab Ansari, one of the prime suspects behind the attack on the American Centre in Kolkata, on Friday confessed that he had given money to Jaish-e-Mohammed leader Sheikh Omar Saeed on several occasions.
CBI sources said Ansari had confessed that he had given money to Sheikh, currently under arrest in Pakistan for his role in the abduction of American journalist Daniel Pearl.
Ansari had confessed that he had masterminded the abduction of Katim Roy Burman, a businessman from West Bengal, and extracted a ransom of Rs 37.5 million. He sent that money to Sheikh through hawala channel.
Out of this amount, sources said Sheikh had sent $100,000 through telegraphic transfer to Mohammed Atta, the leader of the hijackers who carried on the September 11 attacks in the United States.
However, Ansari said he did not know that the money was sent to Atta.
