The train was on its way from Kurla to Darbhanga in Bihar when it derailed at 0530 hours (IST), disrupting traffic on the Jabalpur-Narsinghpur section of the Central Railway, a railway spokesman said in Bhopal.
"Of the nine bogies that had derailed, four had overturned," he said.
An accident relief train has been sent from Itarsi to the derailment site while a team of railway officials from Mumbai is expected to reach the site some time later in the day, the spokesman added.
Train services towards Mumbai are expected to be restored by Friday evening and traffic towards Calcutta by Saturday morning, railway officials said.
