Hurriyat Conference on Tuesday appealed to the United Nations and other world bodies to take note of the random arrests of political leaders and activists in Jammu and Kashmir and put pressure on India to change what it called 'rigid policy' towards Kashmir.
The appeal came in the wake of continued detention of several of its leaders, which Hurriyat termed as an 'act of frustration' on the part of the government.
In a statement issued in Srinagar, the 23-party separatist amalgam said Ghulam Nabi Sumji, senior vice-president of Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference, has been shifted to the central jail at Srinagar and booked under Public Safety Act, while Mukhtar Ahmed Waza of J&K Peoples' League, has been shifted to Kotbalwal jail in Jammu.
JKLF leader Bashir Ahmed Bhat, Hurriyat spokesman and general secretary Sheikh Abdul Rashid and Ghulam Nabi Dar, who were arrested along with Sumji and Waza on Saturday, continued to be detained in police stations, the statement said.
The whereabouts of Farooq Ahmed Tawheedi of Islamic Students League, who was arrested from Sopore, as also of the leaders arrested earlier, including Ahaddullah and Ghulam Mohammed Bhat of Jamaat-e-Islami, were not known, it said.
"The arrests are uncalled for and unfortunately demonstrates the frustration of the government," it said.
"We appeal once again to the United Nations and other world bodies to take strong cognizance of the arrests of political leaders and activists and force India to change its rigid policy towards Kashmir," the statement said.
