China says disputes should
not affect ties with India

China on Thursday said its unresolved disputes with India should not impede development and consolidation of bilateral ties in the new century.

"Certain issues between the two countries should not affect the development of relations and the two sides should, through friendly consultations, find proper ways to resolve their disputes," Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi told reporters in Beijing.

Commenting on Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji's ongoing visit to India, Sun said it has consolidated ties and enhanced mutual understanding and trust.

"Both sides have maintained that common interests between the two countries far outweigh their disputes. We maintain the visit has yielded many fruits and promoted the development of relations between China and India."

During the visit, the two sides signed six agreements.

China also announced commencement of regular air services between Beijing and New Delhi in March.

Sun said during his meetings with Indian leaders, Zhu reaffirmed China's consistent policy on India and Pakistan.

"As a close and friendly neighbour of India and Pakistan, we sincerely hope the two countries can solve their disputes through peaceful means and through consultations," Sun said.

Zhu is scheduled to conclude his six-day official visit to India on Friday.

During his stay in Delhi, Zhu called on President K R Narayanan, Vice President Krishan Kant and held talks with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
