Indian embassy staffer
abducted, beaten up

K J M Varma in Islamabad

An Indian High Commission staffer was on Saturday abducted by suspected ISI operatives and released after four-and-a-half hours of torture and interrogation, Indian officials said.

Kulwant Singh was abducted at around 11.30 am while he was returning home from office along with his 10-year-old son.

Singh's abduction came a day after a Pakistani High Commission staffer was apprehended in New Delhi on spying charges.

The charge-de-affairs of the Indian High Commission, Sudhir Vyas, later said Singh had suffered injuries to his chest and back.

Besides being forced to sign a statement, Singh was also photographed, Vyas said.
