US freezes assets of two Sikh groups

The United States on Thursday added two Sikh separatist groups to a list of 'specially designated global terrorist' entities, extending the US 'war on terrorism' into new territory.

They are the Babbar Khalsa and the International Sikh Youth Foundation (ISYF), the Washington-based office of foreign assets control in the US treasury department said.

They are the first Sikh groups designated by the US in any category of 'terrorist' organisations.

The listing means that financial institutions in the US must freeze the assets of the groups.
