Uneasy calm prevails in Ayodhya

An uneasy calm prevailed on Friday morning in Ayodhya with the administration throwing a security blanket around it to prevent the Vishwa Hindu Parishad from carrying out a shila daan later in the day.

All roads leading to Ayodhya wore a deserted look and security personnel arrested around 75 karsevaks who were trying to sneak into the temple town.

An undeclared curfew appeared in force in the twin cities of Ayodhya and Faizabad.

Security personnel virtually sealed off VHP's campuses in Karsevakpuram and Ramsevakpuram and the workshop where the outfit's leader Ashok Singhal and Ram Janambhoomi Nyas president Parmhans Ramachandra Das were staying.

Paramhans conducted a routine havan at the workshop in the morning.

Faizabad Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhat Kumar, while appealing to Paramhans not to take any extreme step, said the police would be forced to arrest him if he insisted on conducting shila daan

District Commissioner Anil Kumar Gupta, who is also the receiver for the acquired land, said he would accept the shila provided it did not violate the Supreme Court directive or the prohibitory orders in force in Ayodhya and was carried out outside the acquired land.
