Five persons, including four security force personnel, were killed and 10 others injured in a militant attack on an army camp at Chasana near Mahore in Udhampur district of Jammu region.
In the gun battle that followed, one militant was gunned down. A search is on for his companion.
A police source said the heavily armed militants hurled grenades and opened fire on the guards at the joint camp of the army and the Central Reserve Police Force before entering it late on Saturday night.
Three soldiers and a CRPF trooper were killed on the spot, the source said. Ten others, including six CRPF personnel, were injured.
Troops immediately took up positions inside the camp and engaged the militants in a gun battle that continued till late on Sunday morning.
Sunday's attack came close on the heels of last week's attack on an army camp at Kaluchak on the outskirts of Jammu, in which 34 persons, including three militants, were killed.
Security in the summer capital Srinagar has been further beefed up in view of the heightened militant activity. Paramilitary forces and police are frisking all passers-by and checking all vehicles.
Meanwhile, the situation on the international border and the Line of Control continues to be tense with heavy shelling taking place. Defence sources said heavy exchanges of fire continued on the border in Jammu division.
