Cyclone threat near coastal Orissa dissipates

The threat of cyclone in coastal Orissa on Tuesday noon passed, as the system crossed the coast near Sagar Island in West Bengal at about 1430 IST, meteorologist of the Bhubaneswar meteorological centre Mrutunjaya Mohapatra said.

The coastal areas will, however, witness heavy to moderate rainfall in the next 12 hours, he said.

The cyclone on Monday had threatened the coast and was located about 200 km southeast of Visakhapatnam at about 2330 IST.

Meteorologists at the Bhubaneswar meteorological centre had predicted gales with a speed of 70 km to 80 km along with heavy rainfall across the southern and coastal districts.

Fishermen had been warned not to venture into the sea and danger signals had been hoisted at all four ports, including Paradeep and Gopalpur, he said.

The coastal districts, including Cuttack, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, and Kendrapada, have already been experiencing squally weather with rains since Sunday night.
