Cops gun down militant
near Shiv temple in Jammu

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

An encounter broke out on Monday morning between a militant holed up near a Shiv temple in Panjbakhtar area in Jammu and security forces, police sources said.

The militant fired several rounds of fire around 0800 IST before security forces managed to kill him.

Sources said that five militants are believed to have sneaked into Jammu of which three have now been eliminated, while the others are still in hiding.

The curfew imposed on the city on Sunday night after militants stormed into the famous Raghunath temple has not yet been lifted.

Several hundred people had held demonstrations outside the temple complex on Sunday evening protesting against the state government's alleged failure to deal with militants.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Girish Chandra Saxena accompanied by Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma on Monday visited the Raghunath temple complex.

They were briefed about the incident by the Inspector-General of Police and priests of the temple.

One militant had managed to enter the temple complex after exploding a grenade and took cover behind a curtain while two others ran towards Residency Road. The lights of the complex went off at that time, the IGP said.

However, the sanctum sanctorum, including the historic idols are totally safe, they added.

The three dignitaries also visited the Jammu Medical College hospital and inquired about the condition of the 52 injured persons.

Later, the chief minister told reporters that a 'mischievous propaganda and a disinformation campaign' was on with regard to government jobs being given on compassionate ground to the kin of militants killed way back in the early 90s.
