Poverty has forced a mother in Orissa's Jajpur district to sell her week-old twins to a neighbour. However, the administration says it is a case of adoption.
Thirty-six-year-old Manjulata Sahu, a mother of five in Odeipur village of Jajpur, sold her twins to one Bina Jena of Patpur village in the neighbouring district of Bhadrak for Rs 500, one bag of paddy and 10 kg rice.
"I sold my twins due to poverty. I had no other option after my husband left me a couple of months ago," said Sahu.
"It is a case of adoption. Since Bina was childless he wanted to adopt them. Besides, he was also related to Manju and had helped her in times of difficulty," district Collector Kashinath Sahu told rediff.com
Earlier, such cases were reported from the impoverished Kalahandi, Bolangir and Koraput districts.
After the cyclone in 1999, these kind of cases seem to be happening in coastal districts also, said Hemanta Rath, president of the Kalinga Sena, a non-government organisation.
