A special court constituted under the Prevention of Terrorism Act in Chennai has extended for five days the judicial custody of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko.
Vaiko, who was arrested under the stringent anti-terrorism law on July 11 for making speeches in support of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, has been kept in judicial custody since then with three extensions along the way. The third was to end on Friday.
Special Judge L Rajendran at Poonamallee, near Chennai, also extended till October 23 the detention of eight other MDMK leaders who had been arrested with Vaiko for similar pro-LTTE speeches.
The judge said the extension was based on a special report submitted to the court by Public Prosecutor Jayakumar, a copy of which will be given to the defence counsel later.
Jayakumar requested the court not to make the report public saying it would hamper investigations.
