The Orissa government has decided to open 'pay clinics' in state-run hospitals, which would function beyond office hours, a top health department official said on Saturday.
The first such hospital would be set up on an experimental basis at the dental wing of the Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College at Cuttack, 26 km from the state capital, he said.
Patients, who avail treatment at these 'pay clinics', would have to pay a fee of Rs 40, which would be utilised in the development of health infrastructure in these clinics.
A portion of this would also be given to the doctors and other health officials who work in these clinics, he said.
The 'pay clinics' would function between 3 pm and 5 pm on weekdays and from 8 am to 12 noon during holidays.
The government had taken this decision under the Orissa Medium-term Fiscal Reforms Programme 2001-2005 to give a boost to the medical infrastructure in the state, he added.
Orissa would be the second state after West Bengal to introduce 'pay clinics', he said.
