Orissa Museum acquires ancient Buddha statue

Giridhar Gopal in Bhubaneswar

The Orissa Museum has acquired an ancient Buddha statue dating back to the tenth century AD, museum superintendent Dr Chandrabhanu Patel told rediff.com on Wednesday.

The statue, made of copper, zinc and nickel, is 16.5 cm long, and weighs 4.3 kg.

The idol, on a lotus pedestal, is in dhyana mudra (sitting posture). A necklace and a scorpion tattoo at the back also adorn it.

The Cuttack police last month had recovered the statue from one P B Giri of Midnapore district in West Bengal. The police, later, handed the statue over to the museum.
