Monthly season tickets and card tickets would cost extra from July 1 on Mumbai's suburban sector.
The Railways has decided to impose a surcharge to recover the loan amount received from the World Bank for the ambitious Mumbai Urban Transport Project.
Discussing a white paper on safety on Indian Railways, Union Minister of State for Railways B Dattatreya told reporters on Wednesday that a surcharge of Re 1 would be imposed on a second-class card ticket and Rs 2 on a first class card ticket.
A surcharge of Rs 10 would be imposed on second-class monthly season pass and Rs 30 on a quarterly pass. A surcharge of Rs 15 would be imposed on a first class pass for the first 50kms.
However, no surcharge would be imposed for the first five kilometers of a journey, he added.
The surcharge is expected to generate an estimated revenue of Rs 95 crore annually. Fifty per cent of it would go to the state government and the rest to the Railways, the minister said.
