Pradeep Sawant in police custody

Deputy Commissioner of Police Pradeep Sawant was on Thursday remanded to police custody till January 12. On Wednesday, he had been arrested under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act in connection with the fake stamp paper racket.

Sawant is accused of dealing leniently with prime accused Abdul Karim Telgi when the latter was in custody of the Mumbai police for 85 days between November 2002 and January 2003. At that time, Sawant was a Deputy Commissioner of Police in the Crime Branch of the Mumbai police.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Bureau on Thursday continued its raid on his residence in Matunga, central Mumbai and his official premises in the city.
