The Shiv Sena on Friday said it will challenge the Bombay high court's order imposing a fine of Rs 20 lakh on the party for calling a bandh on July 30, 2003 in the wake of a blast in the city.

Speaking to rediff.com, Sena chief spokesman Subhash Desai said: "We have time. We will take the matter to the Supreme Court."

The Bharatiya Janata Party, which had supported the bandh, has also been fined Rs 20 lakh.

Four persons were killed and over 40 injured

Senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari called the HC order "unfortunate."

"In a democracy everyone has a right to express his opinion. Mahatma Gandhi and Lokmanya Tilak also gave bandh calls," he said.

He said the courts must suggest an alternative if they are striking down the option of bandhs as a form of protest.
