At least five persons, including a militant, were killed and 48 injured when ultras lobbed a grenade while making a bid to abduct a contractor from his house in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, a police spokesman said in Srinagar on Wednesday.

Four masked militants entered the house of Ghulam Hassan at Wadwan and tried to abduct him for ransom. However, the inmates resisted and raised an alarm attracting the attention of neighbours who collected on the spot.

They overpowered one of the militants, removed his mask and identified him as Bilal Ahmad Bhat of Naidgam village. According to the villagers, Bilal was a surrendered militant.

Seeing this, his associates hurled a grenade at the crowd that had assembled killing five persons, including Bilal, and injuring 48 others. The others killed in the explosion were identified as Wali Mohammad Dar and his son Sajjad Wali Dar, Mohammad Subhan Dar and Ghulam Hassan Malla.
