The Orissa government has imposed a ban on corporal punishment in all state-run and private schools in the state, an official release said in Bhubaneswar.

Issuing the direction to officials of the school and mass education department on Thursday, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik asked them to ensure that no kind of physical punishment is meted out to students studying in schools across the state.

Several child rights organisations had been demanding a ban on corporal punishment in Orissa following reports of torture in schools.
