Lawyers in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday temporarily called off their 10-day-old strike, in protest against a police lathi charge on them on September 3, Oudh Bar Association president Ashok Nigam said.

The decision followed an assurance from Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav that action would be taken against guilty police officials within two days, Nigam said.

A delegation of lawyers had called on Yadav on Saturday at the latter's invitation, Nigam and office-bearers of the Central and Lucknow Bar Associations told a joint press conference in Lucknow.

Keeping in view the chief minister's positive assurance and the interest of litigants, the various bar associations unanimously resolved to suspend the agitation temporarily and give the chief minister time to carry out his assurance. The lawyers will resume work from Monday.
