Over 90,000 people in Sangli and Kolhapur districts have been evacuated due to flooding, Maharashtra Cooperatives Minister Patangro Kadam said on Wednesday.

"With the water level in the rivers rising, 25,000 more people will have to be evacuated in Sangli," Kadam told  reporters.

Meanwhile, the toll due to heavy rains in the state has gone up to 987. The toll includes 439 in Mumbai, 207 in Thane, 147 in Raigad and 61 in Navi Mumbai, he said.

The defence authorities had been requested to make more boats and helicopters available for relief work in the state, he said. "I have spoken to the defence minister in this regard," Kadam said.

Due to the backwaters of the Almatty dam in Karnataka, thousands of hectares of agricultural land in Kolhapur and Sangli districts had been flooded, he added.
