In the second such incident in the past two days, militants shot dead newly-elected National Conference municipal councillor and veteran freedom fighter Mohammad Maqbool Shah in Srinagar.

The militants shot Shah as he was coming out from a mosque after offering evening prayers in Ikhrajpora, in Srinagar, at 1830 hours on Wednesday, official sources said.

He was rushed to Soura medical institute, where doctors declared him dead.

Shah, a staunch supporter of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, was elected to the Srinagar municipal corporation in the February 1 civic polls on a NC ticket.

The NC had decided to nominate him as mayor of Srinagar Municipal Corporation, NC sources said.

The police said that it was difficult to provide security to each and every candidate in the civic polls.

Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has also ruled out individual security to the candidates.

On Tuesday, militants shot dead newly-elected councillor and chairman-designate of Beerwah municipal committee Ghulam Mohiuddin Mir in Budgam district of central Kashmir.

Mir, one of 13 People's Democratic Party councillors elected to the committee, was dragged out from his car and shot dead.
