Aftershocks continue in north India, Pakistan

Five aftershocks, all of them measuring more than 5.0 on the richter scale, jolted North India and Pakistan on Friday within hours of the massive earthquake which killed more than 1,000 people across the region.

All of them were epicentred in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, the origin of the first quake of 7.4 intensity at 9.20 AM.

The first aftershock measuring 5.3 on the richter scale was recorded at 9.56 AM, the Meteorological office said in New Delhi. This was followed by aftershocks of 5.1 intensity at 10.38 AM, 5.5 at 10.49 AM, 5.4 at 10.56 AM and 5.1 at 12.12 PM.

Another low-intensity tremor was felt in Srinagar at around 4.18 PM on Saturday spreading panic among the public and forcing them to run out of their houses.

This was the eighth aftershock of the massive quake that rocked Jammu and Kashmir Saturday morning.
