Heavy rainfall has been forecast in parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh over the next couple of days under the influence of a depression located 400 kms east southeast of Chennai, which is "almost stationary" over the area.

The depression is likely to intensify and move in a northwesterly direction and fishermen have been advised not to venture into sea for the next 36 hours beginning 8.30 AM on Thursday, the Indian Meteorological Department said in Chennai.

Under its influence, heavy rainfall is likely to occur at a few places over north coastal Tamil Nadu and south coastal Andhra Pradesh during the period.

These areas are also likely to experience squally winds with speeds ranging between 55-65 km per hour during the same period, the IMD said.

Local caution signal number three had been hoisted at the ports of Chennai, Ennore, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Pondicherry in view of the rough sea condition, it added.
