Home ministry commences review of POTA, PSA cases in J&K

Following Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's assurance that the government would review the cases of prisoners held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and the Public Safety Act, the union home ministry has swung into action.

According to a press release issued by the ministry, Union Home Secretary V K Duggal had directed his officials to begin the review process forthwith.

"Following yesterday's talks between the prime minister and the 5-member All Party Hurriyat Conference delegation, led by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, the home ministry has initiated the process of review of all cases pertaining to detention," the press note said.

The home ministry advised the Jammu and Kashmir government to examine the cases of those held under POTA and Public Safety Act, and make recommendations at the earliest for consideration of a joint screening committee of the officials of the union home ministry and state government.
