Police sources said the fisherman, Julien (36), was fishing along with three others in a mechanised boat, when the Navy opened fire around 0130 hrs. Julien suffered bullet wounds on his right hip.

Fellow fishermen -- Robert, Antony and Michael -- brought him by boat to Rameswaram.

The injured fisherman, hailing from Thangachci Madam in Rameshwaram, was rushed to Ramanathapuram Government Hospital, from where he was referred to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai as the bullets could not be removed.
