Former Rajya Sabha member and leading Tamil actor R Saratkumar on Monday resigned from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

The move comes a few weeks after the party expelled his wife Radhika.

Saratkumar joined the party on the eve of the May Assembly polls.

In a statement, Saratkumar, recently elected as the president of the South Indian Artists' Association, said, "Professional workload and being the president of the association needs my undivided attention. Under these circumstances, I have tendered my resignation to the party leader."

"Due to certain and unwanted developments, I have been forced to take a hard but painful decision regarding my political career," he said.

Saratkumar had quit the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to join the AIADMK just on the eve of assembly polls, alleging that he and his wife were humiliated by the family members of the DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

Radhika was expelled from the AIADMK last month, but she contended she was never a member of the party.

When she went to call on Jayalalithaa along with her husband, the membership card was thrust into her, she had said.
