Prime Minister Manmohan Singh chaired a high powered committee meeting on Monday night to consider whether it would be prudent to go in for troop withdrawal from some areas of Jammu and Kashmir in the next few months.

During this time, the snow melts in the upper reaches of the border between India and Pakistan -- a route used by terrorists to infiltrate into India from Muzaffarabad.

Defence Minister A K Anthony and Chief of the Army Staff General J J Singh along with National Security Advisor M K Narayanan were present at the meeting.

Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has been putting pressure on the govenment to withdraw the troops.

While Congress is dragging its feet on troop withdrawal, Bharatiya Janata Party has cautioned the government against any such move.

Ashok Singhal, of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, said that the government should not do anything that would disturb the Parliamentary resolution which says that Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir is a part of Kashmir, and the government should do whatever it can to secure the release of that region and make it a part of Jammu and Kashmir, which is an integral part of India.
