Upbeat about the Bharatiya Janata Party's victory in Assembly polls in Uttarakhand and Punjab, former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Sunday said he believed his party's performance will be equally good in the upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Vajpayee told reporters while celebrating Holi at his residence in Delhi that he was confident about the BJP's prospects in the key state of the Hindi heartland.

Vajpayee said he could see "a wave of change in Uttar Pradesh."

In Punjab, the BJP made significant electoral gains by winning 19 of the 23 seats it contested in the state.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister-designate B C Khanduri is scheduled to take oath of office on March 8 after the BJP wrested power from the Congress in the hill state.

Polls to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly will be held in seven phases from April 7.
