Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's special envoy Shyam Saran met Nepal Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on Wednesday and discussed the political developments in Nepal as New Delhi said it wanted to see that the landmark peace process remains on track.
During the 45 minutes meeting between the former Indian foreign secretary and Koirala at his official residence at Baluwatar, the current political situation, including the peace process, came up for discussion, sources said.
India has said it wants to see that the peace process remains on track in Nepal, where the crucial Constituent Assembly polls have been postponed indefinitely after a stand-off between the ruling multi-party alliance and Maoists.
Earlier in the day, on his arrival in Kathmandu on a three-day visit, Saran said, "India wants to see that the peace process remains on track. We will see what India can do to assist (Nepal) in this regard."
Saran, a former ambassador to Nepal, also met Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal, according to party sources. However, details of the talks were not available yet.
Sharan is also expected to meet Maoist chairman Prachanda.
During Saran's meetings with the Nepalese leaders, he is expected to discuss the situation in the Himalayan state following the postponement of the November 22 Constituent Assembly polls, bilateral ties and issues linked to the Terai region bordering India.
Saran is in Kathmandu to take stock of the political situation after a deadlock over Maoists' demands for declaring Nepal a republic and a fully proportional electoral system led to the postponement of election.
