An Andhra Pradesh medico, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Pennsylvania in the US, apparently committed suicide, police claimed on Tuesday after earlier reports said he was murdered.

The body of Akkaldevi Srinivas (29), hailing from Korutla in Karimnagar district, was found in a pool of blood with stab wounds to his neck on Saturday, according to a friend in the Scranton State University where he was pursuing a post-graduation course in Internal Medicine.

Preliminary findings by the police pointed to suicide, police sources said without giving details.

The sources speaking to PTI in New York, on the condition of anonymity, said a suicide note was found.

An MBBS student of 1995 batch of Gandhi Medical College in Hyderabad, Srinivas had joined Scranton State University in 2005 after completing his MS.

He went to the US in 2002. The victim's father Anjaiah has left for the US to bring the body after the family received the shocking news on Sunday.

Relatives of the victim were earlier quoted as saying that he was either stabbed or shot at.

The police version came after preliminary reports said he was murdered.

The medico's family members have appealed to the government to render assistance in bringing back the body of the deceased and also to get the incident investigated.

In December, two PhD students from Andhra Pradesh -- Chandrasekhar Reddy Komma of Kurnool district and Allam Kiran Kumar of Karimnagar district -- were shot dead at Louisiana State University.

A research student from Jharkand -- Abhijit Mahato -- was also shot dead in his apartment in North Carolina last month.
