With 21 candidates remaining in the fray, the main contest in the prestigious Jammu parliamentary constituency is going to be between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The Congress has repeated is candidate, Madan Lal Sharma who had won this seat during 2004 Lok Sabha elections, while the BJP has fielded Leila Karan Sharma as its candidate.

Leila Karan Sharma shot into limelight as the spearheaded the Jammu agitation for restoration of land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board in north Kashmir's Baltel area last summer.

The BJP cashed on Hindu sentiment in the Jammu region and won eleven seats during the assembly elections held in December last year.

The party had improved its position a lot, as previously it had only one legislator in the 87-member state assembly, elections for which were held in 2002.

By fielding Leila Karan Sharma from the constituency, the BJP will heavily depend upon the Hindu votes although it is also playing the regional card by advocating abrogation of Article 370 and claiming discrimination with the Jammu region.

The Congress-National Conference combine candidate, Madan Lal Sharma, however, is a strong contender for the seat which has sizeable Muslim pockets in the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch districts which are part of the parliamentary constituency.

Madan Lal Sharma had wrested the Jammu Lok Sabha seat by defeating his nearest rival Dr. Nirmal Singh of BJP by a margin of 17,572 votes.

Jammu parliamentary constituency has 17,21,696 registered voters including 8,89,562 male and 8,32,134 female voters.

This also includes 23,674 service electors which is the highest count among the six parliamentary seats of the state.

Jammu district leads with 9,31,836 voters followed by Rajouri which has 3,56,270 voters. Poonch district has 2,59103 voters while Samba district has 1,74,487 voters.

The opposition, People's Democratic Party has also registered its presence in the constituency by fielding Trilok Singh as its candidate, who, however, many believe, has slender chances of winning the seat.
