Sonia files nomination from Rae Bareli

Congress President Sonia Gandhi [ Images ] on Monday filed her nomination from the Rae Bareli constituency of Uttar Pradesh [ Images ].

She was accompanied to the Returning Officer's chamber in the Collectorate by son Rahul Gandhi [ Images ] and her late husband Rajiv Gandhi's [ Images ] friend Satish Sharma.

Thousands of party workers thronged the parliamentary constituency to cheer for their leader. Prior to filing her nomination, the Congress chief performed a traditional havan (religious ceremony) at the local party office.

Dressed in a beige and red printed sari, Sonia drove off to Lucknow [ Images ] immediately after filing her nomination. She will stop by the tomb of renowned Islamic scholar and cleric Maulana Ali Meeyan in Takia village on her way to the airport.
