Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday filed her nomination from the Rae Bareli constituency of Uttar Pradesh.

She was accompanied to the Returning Officer's chamber in the Collectorate by son Rahul Gandhi and her late husband Rajiv Gandhi's friend Satish Sharma.

Thousands of party workers thronged the parliamentary constituency to cheer for their leader. Prior to filing her nomination, the Congress chief performed a traditional havan (religious ceremony) at the local party office.

Dressed in a beige and red printed sari, Sonia drove off to Lucknow immediately after filing her nomination. She will stop by the tomb of renowned Islamic scholar and cleric Maulana Ali Meeyan in Takia village on her way to the airport.
