Rejecting Bharatiya Janata Party chief Rajnath Singh's charge that Varun Gandhi was being harassed by state authorities, the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday said BJP's Lok Sabha candidate from Pilibhit was meted out "good treatment" and that he was fit.

"The allegation of Rajnath Singh regarding harassment of Varun is far from truth. Varun is being meted out good treatment as per the jail manual. Directives of Human Rights

Commission in this regard are being followed," the state government said in a statement issued in Lucknow on Tuesday.

"All the facilities are being given to Varun as per the manual and as per the directions of Chief Judicial Magistrate. He has been allowed to take homemade food inside the jail," the statement said.

"A daily health checkup of Varun is being done and as per the medical reports he is fit and has not lost weight," the statement added.
