Delhi will use Bollywood songs to encourage people to vote

April 10, 2009 20:57 IST

To encourage voters to exercise their franchise in the Lok Sabha polls, the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer has decided to rerun its "Pappu can't vote" campaign which it had used in the Assembly elections last year.

Apart from the "Pappu can't vote" jingle, songs from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, and Rock on will also be used in the new audio-visual campaign to encourage people to cast their vote.

"During the last Municipal Council of Delhi elections we were alarmed with the situation as the voter turnout was very dismal at 43 per cent. In elections after elections, the voter turnout is going down as people just absolve themselves from the responsibility of choosing a responsible government," Chief Eelection Officer Satbir Silas Bedi told media-persons in New Delhi.

She said the campaign had hit the right chord and there was a quantum jump in the polling percentage."We decided to prepare a sequel asking the people to get up early as if going on a morning walk and cast their votes," she said.

"We hope the campaign will hit the right chord this time too as we don't want to give people philosophical and didactic lectures to goad them into voting. This campaign is easy to eyes and ears and we are sure it will achieve its purpose," Bedi added.
