The Election Commission on Saturday slapped a notice on senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh for violating the model code of conduct by allegedly threatening to use the Central Bureau of Investigation against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.
In a public meeting held on April 20 at Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh, Singh had reportedly said if Mayawati attempted to harass Congress workers, she should understand that the case against her was pending with CBI and the Congress could get back though it did not want to misuse the probe agency.
The EC said that it has seen the video recording of the speech of Singh at the public meeting and that he has violated the model code of conduct.
Giving time to Singh till Sunday to explain as to why action should not be taken against him for violating the mode code, the EC said it would decide the matter without any further notice if he failed to give his explanation.
A case has already been registered against Singh in Hardoi for allegedly making objectionable remarks against the Chief Minister.
Singh has been refuting reports that he had threatened to target Mayawati with the help of CBI and maintained that he had only asked the BSP government not to create trouble for the Congress workers.
When contacted, Singh said that he was yet to get the EC notice.
