Though BJP distanced itself from the allegedly communal statements made by Varun Gandhi, the party was categorical that Varun is still their candidate and said there is no plan to cancel his candidature.
"Varun Gandhi is our official candidate for the Lok Sabha elections.....when the election notification is made he will contest on the BJP symbol," party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.
Javadekar denied reports that the party was mulling over fielding Varun as an independent candidate and extend him tacit support.
The saffron party had announced Varun's candidature a few months ago from Pilibhit, which was till now represented by his mother Maneka Gandhi. Maneka has shifted to the adjacent Aaonla constituency for the forthcoming polls.
The BJP, however, made it clear that it did not agree with the statements allegedly made by Varun.
