The Congress on Monday accused Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate L K Advani of advocating "divisive politics" during electioneering.

All India Congress Committee general secretary M Verappa Moily told media persons in Guwahati, "Advani is preaching divisive politics during electioneering with a view to divide the nation on communal lines."

"He is poisoning the minds of the people of Assam by only talking about infiltration and shedding crocodile tears. He should be asked what the National Democratic Alliance government had done to update the National Registrar of Citizen, Indo-Bangla border fencing and setting up foreigners tribunal to identify immigrants," Moily, the party's in charge of Assam, said.

Claiming that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government had tackled all the burning issues faced by Assam, Moily alleged that the BJP wanted to "politicise the Mumbai and Assam terror attacks" which was "unfortunate".

"The BJP's communal stance can be judged by their support to Varun Gandhi," Moily said and asserted that the Congress planned no political vendetta against him.

"The UP government is dealing with the matter (Varun's arrest) and the BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party) is not a Congress partner," he said.

Reacting to a query, Moily said the Congress is not worried if some of its allies desert the party stating that there is no alliance at the national level with any other party.

Giving a list of achievements of the UPA government in contrast to the previous NDA regime, the Congress leader said the Gross Domestic Product, per capita income, plan outlay and investment had gone up considerably in the past few years.

The Centre had also provided Rs 40 crore for protection of Asia's largest river island, Majuli in upper Assam while 54 projects for flood control was sanctioned, he said.

Exuding confidence that the Congress will win the Lok Sabha poll in Assam, Moily alleged that the regional opposition Asom Gana Parishad party had "surrendered" to the BJP.

"In the so called seat sharing arrangement as many as eight of the 14 seats have been surrendered to the BJP," he said.
