PM, Advani meet in Parliament

May 06, 2009 19:52 IST

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his political bete-noire Bharatiya Janata Party leader L K Advani on Wednesday came face-to-face in Parliament at a function to pay tribute to freedom fighter Motilal Nehru on his birth anniversary.

Dr Singh and Advani, who are engaged in a bitter verbal duel in the campaigning for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, greeted each other with folded hands and later shook hands.

The two leaders posed for the cameras along with Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and others in front of the portrait of Nehru in the Central Hall of Parliament.

On the campaign trail, Advani has been accusing Dr Singh of being the weakest prime minister in the country's history.

The PM had sought to counter Advani, who has been projecting himself as a strong leader, contending that the BJP leader was 'weeping' when the Babri mosque was demolished.

Besides Chatterjee, some Members of Parliament and officials also paid tribute to Nehru, who was born on May 6, 1861. Nehru's portrait was unveiled in Central Hall on March 30, 1957 by the then President Rajendra Prasad.
