The Left parties would not extend outside support to a Congress-led government at the Centre, but would prefer to sit in the opposition, Left Front constituent Forward Bloc said in Kolkata on Thursday.

"In no circumstances will the four Left parties -- Communist Party of India-Marxist, Communist Party of India, Forward Bloc and the Revolutionary Socialist Party support a Congress-led government at the Centre from outside. If necessary, we will sit in the opposition. This is our decision," Ashok Ghosh the state general secretary of Forward Bloc told PTI.

He sidestepped a question on what Left parties would do if the Congress emerged as the single largest party and formed a 'minority government' and whether they would abstain from voting in the event of a trust vote in parliament to enable such a government to survive to prevent Bharatiya Janata Party from coming to power.

Ghosh said the stand of the Left parties so far is not to support a Congress-led government. However, the 86-year-old Forward Bloc patriarch, added, "What will happen in a changed scenario I cannot say."
