MIM says it will "think" of supporting Congress if approached

May 17, 2009 18:00 IST
Putting the ball in the Congress' court for seeking post-poll support, the All India Majilis-e-Ittihad-al-Muslimin party on Sunday said it can "think of" extending support to the United Progressive Alliance, if approached.

Talking to NDTV, the party president and Hyderabad Member of Parliament Asaduddin Owaisi, however, maintained that MIM was part of the UPA before the elections.

"Before the elections, we were part of the UPA. So far, no one from the Congress has contacted us that they require our support. If they want our support...certainly our party can think about it," Owaisi said.

"But, yes before the elections we were a part of the UPA -- it's a very well known fact," he said.

The MIM leader said, "But, as of now no one has talked to us or spoken to us. Let us wait and see what happens."

The Muslim political party has bagged seven seats in the assembly elections this time and retained the prestigious Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat.
