Singur, which is in Hoogly Lok Sabha seat, gave TC a lead of 22,363 votes, which is 6,363 votes more than it scored in panchayat polls. Communist Party of India-Marxist's sitting Member of Parliament Rupchand Pal, who held the seat since 1989, lost to TC candidate Ratna Dey Nag by a convincing 83,000 votes.
"This proves that those who gave or did not give land for the Tata Motors small car project voted for Trinamool Congress," said Becharam Manna, convenor of anti-farmland acquisition committee which is led by TC.
Binode Das, Hoogly district secretary of CPI-M, said, "We were not prepared for this result.We could not imagine this situation. The election result will be reviewed," he said.
TC supporters went into celebration at the Tata Motor project site villages of Khaserbheri, Beraberi and Bajemelia. Even at Dobadi village inhabited by day labourers, colours were sprinkled. There was no report of any violence from anywhere in Singur.
