Scotland Yard sleuths meet Delhi cops

Scotland Yard detectives Martin Hawkins and Bruce Hollberry arrived in Delhi in connection with the match-fixing allegations and met Deputy Commissioner of Police Pradeep Srivastava at 4 p m IST at the Delhi police headquarters.

After a brief meeting with Srivastava, the duo met Joint Commissioner of Police Dr. K K Paul.

Speaking to rediff.com, the sleuths said that they are looking into the allegations made by former England player Chris Lewis, and are here to seek the cooperation of the Delhi police. They also said they will help in tracing Sanjeev Chawla, the prime accused in the match-fixing case involving former South African captain Hansie Cronje.

"We are here to associate with the Delhi police case and we expect a similar response from the Delhi police as well," they said.

Attired in white shirts and grey trousers, the two sleuths carried huge leather briefcases of investigating material.

When asked whether they would meet Aushim Khetrapal, the man who is believed to have asked Lewis to help in fixing matches, the sleuths replied that they will neither disclose details about the investigation nor reveal when they will meet Khetrapal and question him.

Lewis had alleged in September last that Khetrapal had contacted him and offered 300,000 pounds for persuading leading English cricketers to throw a match against New Zealand, something the Indian businessman cum sports promoter has denied.

Khetrapal denied that Scotland Yard had got in touch with him.

"I am in Delhi and will wait for their call. I will let the media know when they call us," he said.
