Dempo win Fed Cup openerOur CorrespondentGoa's Dempo Sports Club won the opening match of the Federation Cup football tournament, beating Border Security Force 1-0 via a golden goal at the Nehru Stadium in Madras on Wednesday. After the teams were locked goalless at the end of regulation time, Stanley Colaco headed home the match-winner following a Mario Soares flag-kick in the eighth minute of extra-time. From the corner kick, Nigerian Alesh Shamaki's shot beat BSF goalkeeper Kameshwar Singh but K Mobi Singh managed to clear after the ball it had crossed the goalline. Off the rebound, Colaco leapt high to head home. BSF were reduced to ten men early in the second half after Pradeep Gorai was sent off the field. Dempo, who should have won handsomely but for some wayward finishing and fine saves by the BSF goalkeeper, will meet FC Kochin next in the second round on August 18. On Tuesday, Sporting Club de Goa play Indian Bank in a first round match.
