Kafelnikov out of WimbledonYevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia, seeded seventh, became the first top 10 men's seed to be knocked out of Wimbledon on Saturday when he lost 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, 7-6 to Guillermo Canas of Argentina. Canas won 7-2 on the final set tiebreak, earning a fourth round match against 10th seed Thomas Enqvist on his first match-point. Canas has not gone beyond the second round at Wimbledon before while Kafelnikov has reached the fourth round only twice in seven visits. But Lindsay Davenport, champion in 1999, raced through to the fourth round, beating Switzerland's Patty Schnyder 6-2 6-3. Third seed Davenport was impatient to get into the second week of the championships and harried Schnyder off court one in 54 minutes. "I was just excited and thought I was playing well and wanted to keep it going," said the American, who signalled her comeback from a knee injury with victory in the Eastbourne grasscourt tournament last week. Davenport, who lost in last year's final to compatriot Venus Williams, now plays 14th seed Jelena Dokic, a semifinalist here last year. The Yugoslav beat Austrian Barbara Schett 6-3, 7-5. Sixth seed Mauresmo bows out Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn stunned sixth seed Amelie Mauresmo, knocking the Frenchwoman out of the third round 6-4, 6-4. Mauresmo, a first round loser at the French Open, again disappointed her fans, missing a host of opportunities as she slumped to defeat. Winner of a WTA-best four titles so far this year, Mauresmo came undone against a wily competitor who has reached the fourth round here for four successive tournaments. Just one break was all Tanasugarn needed in the first set as she closed it out in 26 minutes on court 13. The pair exchanged breaks early in the second set until Tanasugarn held for 4-2. Mauresmo, her serve misfiring and her groundstrokes lacking penetration, had the Thai in trouble at 4-3, 0-40 but allowed her to hold for 5-3. Two games later Tanasugarn served out when Mauresmo pushed a forehand into the net. The Thai next plays either French ninth seed Nathalie Tauziat or Uzbekistani Iroda Tulyaganova for a place in the quarter-finals. Tanasugarn beat Tauziat in Eastbourne last week on her way to the quarter-finals of the grasscourt event.
