Humpy takes sole leadWorld junior chess champion Koneru Humpy emerged sole leader after the eighth round in the First Saturday Grandmasters tournament in Budapest, Hungary, on Sunday. In her eighth round match, the 14-yeard-old Indian woman Grandmaster, playing white, got the better of Al-Sayed Mahamad of Qatar in 47 moves to take a full point and swell her tally to six points. Hungarian International Master Peter Hovarth, who she beat in the seventh round on Saturday, and IM Jakab Attila, also of Hungary, share the second spot in the 12-player field with five-and-a-half points each. The victory also kept the Andhra girl on course for her second men's Grandmaster's norm. She needs 2.5 points from the last three rounds, where she playes Fogarasi Tibor from Hungary in 9th, IM Jakab Attila in the 10th and GM Todorovic Goran of Yugoslavia in last round. The First Saturday GM tournament, which began on October 6, ends on October 17. Twelve players from Hungary, Yugoslavia, Syria, Qatar, Vietnam, Bulgaria and India are participating.
