Sunil Kumar in pre-quarter-finalsShailesh SoniJunior India tennis star Sunil Kumar Sipaeya moved into the third round of the boys' singles at the US Open, defeating Komlavi Loglo of the Togolese Republic 6-4, 6-4 in the second round on Tuesday. The Indian will face top seed Gilles Muller of Luxembourg in the third round. Muller defetaed Markus Bayer of Germany 6-1, 7-6(7-2) in his second round match. The German is currently ranked second on the ITF junior rankings and was runner-up at this year's Wimbledon Championships. Sunil came good against Loglo, who is ranked 50th on ITF juniors listings, and registered a straight sets victory with a break in each set. In the girls' singles, Sania Mirza went down to the 12th seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia 2-6, 4-6 in her first round match. The young Hyderabadi lass put up a good fight against a much higher ranked player. In the first set, Sania dropped serve after a deuce in the third game to fall behind. But the Indian came back and had the Russian down at 15-40 in the next game. Sania had four break-points against Zvonareva, but could not convert them. She was broken again in the next game. The little Indian did not give up and had the Russian at yet another break point in the next game and broke her to get one break back. The break saw Russian raising her game and broke Sania in the next game. At 2-5, Sania did save a couple of set points off the Russian's serve in the next game but lost the set. In the second set, Sania was broken in the very first game again. The Russian was on roll as she quickly went up to 3-1 with two relatively easy service games. But the Indian kept fighting and broke the Russian back in the eighth game to level it at 4-4. Zvonareva again broke Sania in the next game and went up 5-4. In the next game the Indian made the Russian fight for the victory as she didn't allowed Zvonareva to walk away. The match took an hour and 13 minutes to complete. In the doubles, Sania partnering Dominique Van Boekel of The Netherlands, defeated the American pair of Theresa Logar and Tory Zawacky 5-7, 7-6(7-3), 6-4 in the first round. The duo will now face the sixth seeded pair of Kaia Kanepi of Estonia and Renata Voracova of The Czech Republic in the second round.
