India's Viswanathan Anand suffered his second successive defeat, going down to underdog Grandmaster Viktor Bologan of Moldova in the third round of the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess meeting at Dortmund, Germany.
The Indian Grandmaster, who finished at the bottom of the table in his previous outing at the event in 2001, looks out of form in this edition also, having also lost his second round tie against GM Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan on Saturday.
After this match, Anand, who only has a draw against GM Peter Leko in the first round to his credit, is placed at the bottom with 0.5 points while Bologan has emerged as the sole leader with 2.5 points.
In other third round ties, Leko shared points with Radjabov while world number two Vladimir Kramnik was held to a draw by GM Arkadi Naiditsch of Germany.
Kramnik is now half a point adrift of Bologan and ahead of third placed Leko and Radjabov. Naiditsch holds the fifth spot with one point.
Anand, who had defeated the Moldovian in their earlier meeting at the 2000 World Championship in New Delhi, started the game with a Caro Kann opening and was evenly placed till he committed a tactical error in the middle game to losing two pawns and eventually the tie in 41 moves.
A distracting move of the bishop by Bologan on the 27th move had the Indian in trouble slowing down his progress on the queenside. Anand then lost a pawn to a simple tactic on the 38th move before resigning on move 41.
"The opening was not a surprise, especially with Rustam Dautov as his (Anand's) second," Bologan said after the game. Dautov is a renowned expert of the variation and is currently working with Anand.
"Anand has tortured me a few times and this time I got one back," he said, adding the "Indian probably made too many queen sorties and my attack was faster on his king."
Prior to this game, Anand was leading the head to head between the two with three wins in the five clashes with no loss.
Meanwhile, Kramnik converted a boring position into a real fight against Naiditsch but the German was alert enough to salvage a draw after a marathon battle that lasted till the 89th move.
Earlier, Kramnik opened with the Queen pawn and employed the Capablanca variation against the Nimzo Indian defence. The Queens got traded quite early in this game and further exchanges led to a minor pieces endgame where there were apparently no chances.
However, Kramnik carried on with his remarkable plan and even won a pawn to his credit but had to content with half a point as Naiditsch managed to held on.
In other tie, Leko and Radjabov agreed to sign truce after just 28 moves even though the latter had a better central control.
